Tim Russert collapsed and died today at the NBC studio while working on voice-overs for a Meet The Press show shot earlier this morning. The world of politics and those of us who count ourselves as political junkies and devotees are shocked by his unexpected death.
My heart goes out to his family, his wife Maureen, and especially his son Luke, who just graduated from Boston College. Tim Russert had just returned from a European vacation celebrating Luke's graduation.

This was truly shocking news as he had not shown any prior ailments.
Hi,
You can't help but feel a loss. Even if you are not a political person he was a great man. If I needed to learn something about this election he is who I turned too. I will miss him and his show. My sympathy's to his family.

What a shock! Tim Russert was one of the few fair and balanced political anchors I enjoyed watching. He will be truly missed.
Very shocking. very sad. too young, only 58, and his parents are in their 80s. He was on the chubby side, but looked healthy otherwise... just watched Tom Brokaw break the news, said he "worked till exhaustion."
This is a huge loss to American political commentary. He was a brilliant and genuine man.
Perhaps the most professional and well-prepared journalist and interviewer to ever grace the television news networks. Tim was fair to everyone and showed no bias. And you knew if you were going to appear on "Meet The Press" you had better be fully prepared, because there was no doubt that he was going to be.
A true class act. He will be greatly missed. Matt
I saw that as soon as I signed on to the internet tonight--I was on the river all day and then at a party. I'm in shock, actually. I thought about blogging about Tim Russert, but then I realized that everyone else probably had beat me to it, and since it was all over broadcast media today, I didn't feel I had anything meaningful to add.
So I'll just say that our country and our world just lost a national treasure and one of the very best at keeping our politicians honest. Tim Russert was in a class by himself in terms of journalistic integrity, and more so than that, he always conducted himself with class and respect for everyone he came into contact with, even the lying politicians lying to him as he conducted his interviews.
Rest in peace, Tim Russert. I'll miss you. PolitiGal1 will miss you. And anyone who ever cared about getting to the bottom of a news event or a political position will miss you.
I'm so sad about this. I used to watch his show with my father.
The news of his death took my breath away. I can't even imagine an election without him. My heart breaks for his wife and son. What an amazing human being he was!
Absolutely tragic. He will surely be missed.
I was genuinely sad when I heard this. He was one of the few people who could go to Washington and pose deep, rational questions to politicians. If everybody was like him, we would be a much better country.
I dedicated yesterday's blog post to him too.

I loved his passion in what he did and his heart finally broke and I hope we can fix the damage that has been done to our country. We suffered a huge loss yesterday and I hope we can carry on his dreams and integrity.
Yeah the news was weird hearing. First thought was, 'couldn't be!' But sure enough it is. Weird... truly weird.
my good gosh Tim died* I saw a Twitter Tweet mentioning Tim but I had no idea he passed away*
I liked him - a good natured Guy + a Smart Dude*
Peace Tim*
As a Buffalonian myself, it was absolutely gut wrenching to hear that Tim had died so suddenly, especially in light of putting Big Russ into an assisted living home last week.
Imagine what must be going through his mind at this second, seeing his son taken so tragically.
As Tom Brokaw said, he wasn't perfect, and he knew that. The world of journalism lost a great person and friend, and the world lost a great man.
Happy trails Tim...keep on telling it like it is. You'll be missed.

The empty chair on MTP was almost too hard to take. I think knowing that he had to put Big Russ in an assisted living facility less than 10 days before he died quite literally "broke his heart." He will be missed, and the word will be lacking.
Being a very conservative thinker, I was always upset with what most of the talking heads on NBC, CBS and ABC had to say. But I always knew that if I watched "Meet the Press" with Tim, I could expect nothing but the truth, unspun and full of fact, not the typical Liberal mumbo jumbo from the mainline press. Tim was anything but "Mainline" and will be truly missed by all, Liberal and Conservative. God be with you, Tim.

thats really a sad news....and a huge loss no doubt...
Really sad... he was very young. I wonder if this was hereditary.
Something is very wrong with your site as everything on your page is only coming up on the left had column.
I almost think that the news is attempting to create something more than it really means. Tim Russert was a second string reporter as far as I can tell. He wssn't Tom Brokaw, George Will, Charlie Rose or even someone that important. He was a news anchor. I find it mildly disturbing that someone would be taken after they died and turned into something they were not. I thought he was insignificant.
It is like calling George Carlin "A hero of the counterculture." This was a fox news statement. He was a comedian. A good comedian, but still a comedian.
This sets a kind of dangerous precedent, where people are blown out of proportion from what they were in life.
The hype surrounding this kind of thing makes me lose sympathy.
As I said at the time of his passing, I really thought he was way too soft on the powers that be-but he still seemed like a decent guy. It is a shame that a guy who was still so enthusiastic in our cybical age was taken from us.
A shock!
